RE: SUFI and the Atlantic Center for the Arts - 1414 Art Center

New Smyrna Beach, Fl. 32168 904-427-6975

The Atlantic Center for the Arts provides Artist-in-Residence

programs where internationally prominent artist work with a few

selected Associates.

The facility is a beautiful set of houses

and studios in the woods. Creative interaction comes from the

relationships between various expressive forms and ideas. New

concepts grow from the contact between graphic, literature,

musical artists and actors.

Since 1982 the list of residence artist include; Edward Albee,

Herbert Laws, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, James Dickey, Elizabeth

Swados, Rauschenberg, Faith Ringgold, Lukas Foss, Howard Nemerov,

out of 100's of participants.

I am trying to put together a Sufi program - writers like Doris

Lessing, music like Harperin or Philip Glass, artist,

philosophers, Sufis. From your writing and your wide range of

information I thought you could help locate working artist who

have been influenced by Sufi thought and practice.

Sounds to me like you're equating "Sufism" with

"Perennial Philosophy/Wisdom" or "Mysticism." Some Official

Orders of

Sufis may disapprove of that equation, but I don't mind... of

course, I don't mind if by "muslim" you mean "servant of GOD"

(that's what the non-capitalized word in Arabic means). That's

becuz I identify with ALL (or NO) "orders" or "denominations" (if

"mystic" or "sufi" is used in an exclusive way, it's not my way)!

My friend & mentor, Hasan Askari, is the "Sufi" (or even

"beyond-Sufism") Teacher/Author/Seer whom I would 1st

recommend to you. Would you like his address? (not on Internet)

You should be aware of Idries Shah (Is he still alive? Last I

knew he lived mostly in London-?).

The best-known Sufi in U.S.

is surely Pir Vilayat Khan, whom I heard speak at the Parliament

of W. Rs. Another order quite wide-spread is the Nimatullahi Sufi

Order, whose magazine, _Sufi - A Journal of Sufism_, I got a copy

of in 1991. It gives 9 U.S. Centers' addresses. 1= 306 West

11th Street, New York, N.Y. 10014. I myself am like Dr. Askari

in being one who "travels in the Wilderness between the Cities of

Religions." My book, _Seeking Communion_ is sufist, taoist,

Omaha Indian... ++---! Your Humble Servant, Steven ("Sufi")
