I can’t think of any technology ( public health, electricity and automobiles ) which has more importance for how people live that was as complex and difficult. Trains, cars, boats, and planes - telegraph - telephone - radio - TV - atomic power and bombs, smart bombs and rockets - joint stock companies and corporations, insurance, withholding taxes and social security - accounting, systems analysis, going to the moon and getting back - have been important and complex but a global broadband network blows past all the historical effect of the industrial revolution ( cities based on harbors and rail networks, factories, tracks and roads, broadcast mass media, ) because:

It is not an evolution - but discontinuous - (Punctuated Equilibrium those phases of evolution that were marketed by massive extinction followed by rapid creation ) because of a contentious acceleration of demand, inventory, members and users, services, and technological capacity.

Laws of the operation of open networks preclude cartel or monopoly control - it is difficult to maintain the imperial domination, limiting regulation, that protected the telecoms or obsolete standards and systems that is Microsoft’s franchise, but open networks require reinvention and paradigms shifts with an increasing pace of change. Excessive profits require protected markets or psychological franchises ( brand names and habits ) that allow lower grade products to charge higher prices.

Microsoft and the telecoms are being left with backbones and commodity services and are out flanked by new systems of broadband enterprise systems, enterprise partners, clients, which are becoming nodes on global, metropolitan, and residential systems so the borders have become blurred. If a bank connects with financial planning, insurance, brokerage, with partners in venture capital, network system, Internet services, search engines and portals, e-commerce using credit system to market and deliver goods and services - and provides networks of suppliers and distributors - out sources of vital functions and even core activities what is the enterprise ? It is no longer a "Bank " but a network of services and capacities - looking for value added services - and making connection with millions of individuals and other activity nodes. A portal could be all things to all people - by linking - real estate network capacity with client access. If you rent space ( both physical, or cyber or put your server in our house ) we will link you to millions of clients, provide supplier and inventory and distribution, so you can sell your designer what ever, where ever - a services of services and consultants who package services.

Price and quality of service becomes quickly apparent and established relationships become quickly obsolete.

The issue is who can really deliver, at what cost, and will they keep up so we don’t have to change too quickly.

The soul of all this is the network - wires, cables, optic fiber, satellites, fixed and mobile wireless, connected by nodes, switches, traffic controls, which allow new services to be invented.
