THE SPOT for PARTICIPATION ON THE WEB:
RE:
The Way of the CLUB: Progress Report:
The system for learning about the web should be on the web - and
needs to be a "learn to learn" style education. Any specific
program or system has a half life of one year, human years in
cyber-space have become dog years. Almost everything will be
different in two years. You can't spend one year learning a
program that will be gone in two years. Learning to learn means
you learn how to figure systems out, and how to get help when you
need it. When all else fails read the instructions.
What lawyers, and most professionals, do is learn how to use
resources, libraries, and other information systems to understand
how to make a specific case.
They learn a particular area of the
law for one case, then move on.
They can't know "the law" but
they know the context and the basics of "the system".
The Web business is by far the most important additional skill
most people can use, need, or are required to have in the fastest
growing job market. We will be able to collect credit card fees
very soon, and look forward to having paying students.
The
opening deal is $50.00 a month while the student need a lot of
help. For this fee we solve problems for them. We will help them
find and down load the software they need. We hold their hands as
they write their first web page. We help them set up meeting,
talk to others on the web, and provide a lot of personal
assistance. In order to do this I am on line from 10 AM EDT ( GMT
+4 = 14:00 ) until 2 PM ( GMT 18:00 ) with a chat channel open
IRC /join #synergy, the talk channel where I check in every hour,
Net Meeting open and Cool talk as well. I post my address/phone #
on talk and people can call me. I then walk them through what
ever they need to do.
They have other programs running at the
same time so I am there to answer questions on the spot. After
they are far enough along ( it may only take a month ) they pay
$10.00 club membership to join groups, keep up their web pages,
find out what's new and interesting, and keep their skill up to
date, with very limited personal assistance, but they can learn
to help each other. It's quite a good deal, and we will raise,
double and triple prices soon.
We are building a learning system for the Internet. We have the
site in California, Turnpike, which has good traffic reports.
It's a big collection of papers on education, small schools with
the theme of learning and doing. I have a "beta" test group that
are doing lessons, trying various systems, and we can see how it
goes. Some students ( rather few ) have figured out the basics of
handling the technology. This means they can move files around,
leave messages, write in a format for the Internet ( hypertext
pages ), and other skills needed just to manage the environment.
The second site, trevista, here in DeLand, that Kevin ( when he
has time ) works on is also fully operational. When the
directories to the Internet ( the card catalogs for Web pages )
registers the new site we intent to move our activities there. We
have a message board and a very rough chat site. People can leave
messages and if they arrange a time, talk (written notes ) on the
web. We have been trying to get voice and chalk board ( white
board ) working with a common meeting. Net meeting does work and
I have talked ( voice on a microphone ) with people from
Australia, Hong Kong, and Europe.
The white board can show
slides, pictures, charts as well and typing and drawing. If we
prepare a presentation, powerpoint, we can share with anyone
hooked in, while talking about the demonstration.
Many people don't care about academic credit. We are still trying
to find a college that will offer the program, collect the fees
and pay us 60% to 80% or more for actually running the classes.
When we have other people teaching other subjects we then split
fees with them.
There are several colleges who appear to be
interested. Many people, however, are happy with non-credit
adult education.
The student work is on the site, people can
refer employers to their web site and display what they can do.
The need for computer literacy involves millions around the
world.
