In the Following books name the characters in the Clinton Impeachment trial:

Tinky Winky (Clinton) is the biggest Teletubby. He is the gentlest of the Teletubbies. His favorite thing is his bag, which he likes to take out with him for walks. He usually sings his song "Tinky Winky". He loves to dance and fall over on his back. Tinky Winky loves all of the Teletubbies, and his best friend is Po, the smallest one.

Clinton also is THE WIZARD OF OZ:

Lewinsky "was effectively raped" by US constitution:

interviewer http

"Tweedledum ( democrat ) & Tweedledee ( Republican )agreed to have a battle; For Tweedledum said Tweedledee had spoiled his nice new rattle. Just then flew down a monstrous crow; ( public reaction ) as black as a tar barrel, Which frightened both the heroes so,

They quite forgot their quarrel."

Henry Hyde as THE MAD HATTER

"

The queen of hearts, ( Hillary ) she made some tarts, all on a summer day: the knave of hearts, ( Linda ) she stole those tarts, and took them quite away!"

In Golding's

"

The Lord of the Flies,"

the struggle for leadership between Ralph and Jack ( Ken Starr ) a central conflict in the plot. Although Ralph initially emerges as a leader, his slow moving, non-appealing policies cause the younger children on the island to lose interest. Ralph is forced to stand by and watch as his following leaves the realm of the civilized to become wild hunter-savages.

This clash of the titans is exemplified in the pop hit "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," written by Tears for Fears. Closely mimicking events in the climax of the novel, the lyrics show the perpetual rat race that Ralph only endures for a short period.

"All for freedom and for pleasure." In the beginning of the novel the main motivating force was simply fun. No one much cared for survival, except for when it gave them pleasure or recognition. Jack's hunting was the extreme end of this movement. With only themselves to answer to, they forsook authority in favor of complete freedom.

"Nothing ever lasts forever." By the time that Ralph realizes that Jack has started his own faction, things are too late.

The littluns have started migrating already and the first whispers of mutiny are emitted.

The downhill run has picked up pace, just as all things must come to an end.

"

There's a room where the light won't find you / Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down." This passage almost exactly describes Ralph as he lies in hiding for the hunters and their fire to come for him. He knows the end is near, yet there is not much he can do.

The opposing force has won, and nothing is left but ruins.

"Everybody wants to rule the world." Truly, the struggle between Ralph and Jack demonstrates the urge for power that can corrupt and destroy. It shows the innermost desires - and evils contained within all of us.

The Trial and the LAW

In the "Trial" first come the sentance, then the trial and only at the end what the "crime" was as charge. We are all guilty but the question is only of what ? AND will we be caught. Both of these are excerpts taken from longer stories.

The first is from the novel called

The Trial and the second is from the short story "

The Great Wall of China." Both are taken, without permission from the book Franz Kafka:

The Complete Stories, which is published by Shocken Books.

Surprise !

What seemed to surprise the Republicans is the public reaction to the Clinton Scandals. Why did his over all popularity go UP ?

1.)

The state of general welfare - the best of times for many years.
2.)

The strong feeling that the scandal was personal and not a danger to the republic.
3.)

The public was worn out by the negative attacks by hypocritical office seekers.
4.)

The fear of "moralist" autocratic attitudes that "Father Knows best" which threaten individual liberties to be odd or different.

While we have shared a fair amount of civil liberty - we have been at times very conformist, or ‘outer directed’ society - where great social and at time legal pressures have tried to impose a narrow concept of morality.

The right and left need each other and we need both.

The left will give away other people’s money to gain popularity; the social overhead costs can get excessive.

The right will allow a level of capitalism where economic competition is stifled by combines or trusts,  social unrest created by great inequalities of wealth.

The genius of balance of power political systems is the middle way. Not too much socialism or unbridled capitalism.

The founding fathers realized that complete liberty led to very unequal results.

That God so loved the poor he made many of them.

A democratic society would be in danger from tyrants from the left - who would redistribute the wealth, and tyrants from the right who would use their economic and social power to turn the state into a "committee for the rule of the owners" of property.

The Money Machine

Basic Civics:

The core of the democratic process is the power of the people to select their leaders. We are free to elect fools, rogues, or statesmen and heroes.

The idea behind the U.S. Constitutional system and all functional democracies are institutions that protect ourselves from ourselves by intermediate institution that act as gate keepers and filters. Establishments, political parties, parliamentary process, the free press, public education, must control who gets what when and how. Rational government depends on regular interjections of reality and objective facts into the mythological mass mind.

The creation of religious politics is only one form of mass mythologies that are fundamentally dangerous to democratic process.

The separation of "real" political from various forms of idealism is critical to the survival of secular political institutions.

The Clinton case is a failure of gatekeepers and the separation of personal and moral issues from policy and civic issues.

A fundamental key to the understanding of human behavior is the separation of personality from character. Politics requires multi-personalities - various roles and acts. It is common and usual for people to forget who they are and believe they have become their character. Since being in the world requires not being completely of the world some sort of mental trick allows playing a character which is convincing to others while keeping some separation from being and reality.

Making Distinctions:

The difference between black and white, or shades of gray.

The idea there are absolute standards and truth is a key idea on the right.

They pride themselves on seeing the world in sharp contracts to "liberals" who are wispy and washy rather than hold to clear distinction between right and wrong.

The impeachment fiasco is a wonderful example how the road to hell is paved in good intentions.

The history of humanity is sprayed with disasters when absolute principles are applied to practical affairs.

The Spanish Amada was sent by the most catholic king on a crusade rather than any sensible hope of conquest.

The inability to make distinctions has led the confusion between a Constitutional process to protect the republic and a criminal trial of private wrongs. Impeachment is not to punish people for wrongdoing but to protect the process from harm.

First Things First :

The Republicans are asking what they did wrong.

First, they say they are stuck on principle - defending the rule of law and the constitution. Second, they got there because of the pack of wolves, let by the Paula Jones attorneys, talk radio, and the "right wing" out to GET Clinton from the beginning.

There was the Whitewater case, the Travel Office case, the Vince Foster case,

The FBI files case, all causing a lot of people a lot of problems for a lot of years.

Then Ken Starr and his 50 million dollar endless probe.

Then last year the Monica event dropped into their hands and it was just too much.

What does an endless effort to GET Clinton and the rule of law and the Constitution have to do with each other - Nothing !

The Christian principle is love and forgivness not hate and anger.

American Government is full of people who enrich themselves from the abuse of power - there is a high level of corruption, though it’s getting better.

There is little evidence that the Clinton’s enriched themselves the way LBJ did, or Newt tried, or 10% of State Legislators, City Council people, County Commissioners, School Board Members,  do every day.  10 % of elected officials are out for what they can get, 10 % are painfully honest and most fall between - leaning this way and that depending on the winds, risks, climate,  and the rewards.

There is honest graft ( Legal fees, Contributions, speaking fees, etc. )

The issue of mass politics is the power of civic ghosts and sprits which were not all friendly.

The scoundrel and rogues use these myths and spirits to gain power.
Hitler, Mussolini, Benito,

OR Long, Huey Pierce, 1893–1935, American politician; b. Winnfield, La. As LOUISIANA governor (1928–31), the "Kingfish" used ruthless and demagogic methods to establish dictatorial power and achieve his program of social and economic reform. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1930, he continued to control the Louisiana government from Washington through his hand-picked successor as governor. A presidential aspirant, he gained national support for his "Share the Wealth" program. He was assassinated in Baton Rouge, La.,

McCarthy, Joseph Raymond,  1908–57, U.S. senator from Wisconsin (1947–57); b. near Appleton, Wis. He achieved national prominence and power with his sensational and unsubstantiated accusations against those U.S. officials (frequently in high positions) he termed "Communists." After the Senate "condemned" him (1954), his influence steadily declined.

We behave better when we are free from these ghosts and demons that arise from a sense of lost - and the insecurity that comes from losing faith in expectations and hopes that are often unrealistic.

The real world and rational action require the ability to let go of mass fancy and dreams that are demolished by the reality of physical and social events. Since the media depends on selling dreams and fancy they are unprepared to deal with unpleasant reality.

While we are attached to reality as driven by formidable physical sensual perceptions but we are also quite capable of assuming parallel nonmaterial universes. A case in point, is the new and old house. Places can and do contain memories which can and do take the form of phantoms, departed souls, ghosts, occupying a analogous reality and - Atomic bombs which also require a psychopathic division of reality and delusion.

The decision to build and use the atomic bomb is the critical predicament of the 20th Century - coming out of the guns of August, 1914 - the Russian Revolution of 1917 - the depression, the rise of Nazi Germany, and leading to the cold war.

It turns out Germany had no serious atomic program or potential.

They never even had a working pile or understood plutonium. Heisenberg knew how to build one (maybe) but thought it out only after one was built and the mathematics of critical mass were clear. Science in Germany had no desire to produce such a weapon for Hitler and only top scientist could produce it.

The American bomb was a result of refuge experts, so Hitler had already destroyed his own capacity - Rockets are engineering, bombs required advanced nuclear physics.

It was an illusion of the German Bomb that promoted and American one, it was an illusion of the need for an invasion of the Japanese mainland that justified its use, it was an illusion that bombs protected us from Soviet Russia that created the H-bomb and 30,000 atomic weapons, it is an illusion that gave us the 5 trillion dollars of the national debt; money mostly spent because of the power of the military-industrial complex ( in both countries ) and their cold war; cost that turn out are not the requirements of real security. Our country with no national health, education, land use or environmental construct or an industrial policy blew away a good part of it’s capital wealth on illusions.

The decline of the soviet state is not a victory for us but may create a worse danger of a wounded, destabilized well armed but crumbling and criminal state.

Their misery is no gain for the West.

Sail on, O Ship of State!

Sail on, O Union, strong and great!

Humanity with all its fears,

With all the hopes of future years,

Is hanging breathless on thy fate!

The Building of the Ship.

Watch the keynote by MCI WorldCom’s

John Sidgmore.

Quoted by Brother Churchill to Brother Roosevelt during WWII

Sailing requires:

A map, Knowing where you are and where you are going
Sails ( ways of collecting and using energy ) A tiller and rudder to direct the energy
A captain, navigator, crew, anchor

Look, then, into thine heart, and write!
1
Voices of the Night. Prelude.

2
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
"Life is but an empty dream!"
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem

Do the "right" thing:

The House Republicans are make a fool of themselves "doing the Right Thing" in face of the facts, the law, and the popular will.

In a Democratic and free enterprise society the functional definition of the "right Thing" is determined by votes and the market.

The whole idea of the Constitution was that there is no certainty, we can not have government by principle but by men. People are not angels so protection of civil society has to be by the balance of power - one power limited by completion of other powers. Free debate and open election determines who wins - and who is "right" at the moment. When Joe McCarthy was popular he was "right" and the way to protect us from this clear and present danger to the rule of law and the Constitution was to see he became unpopular.

The law is determined by what courts decide after an adversarial case is made for both sides about the facts and the law.

The impeachment of the President, the Law is uncertain, but since power is decided by elections - any change in the outcome of an election can only be justified by a overwhelming case of necessity.

Some of the early Colonies were theocracies.  People grew quick tired of the dogmatic assertion of divine principles. Our form of government is not "Christian" by secular, humanist, modern, relativist,  the only overriding PRINCIPLE is of free speech, open debate and elections.

The political numbers:

Half the population is asleep and doesn’t participate but lurks as a sleeping beast -
of the remainder:

A fifth ( 20 % of the population but 40 % of the voters ) are tradition "liberal", pro union, urban, minority, "progressive"

They support cheap money - expanding public services - the core interests and voters of the Democratic party.

A fifth are traditional conservative, pro business, less regulation - hard money, small government. low taxes - the core voters of the Republicans.
so:
All politics is after the 20 % of the voters ( 10 % of the population ) who are in the center

The impeachment follies have the danger of becoming evil;

It is said that people get the government they deserve. BUT, the "people" have shown a lot more sense than the national political system and the media.

The facts are clear.

There is a group of people who really hate Clinton and have been out to get him. After years of fruitless investigations they got him for lying, but not legally defined perjury, about a very seamy affair.  Clinton is guilty of foulness, foolishness,  and falseness but such are all too common, not unusual enough to be a high crime.

There is not the will or the way to impeach the President. This is all smoke and mirrors designed to get power or protect power - meaning only foul, foolish, and false politics.

Nixon said that his hate caused his fall - the hate of Clinton will do more harm to the haters than the hated. Local and State politicians and journalist know the "real America" - and both Republican and Democrats agree with the people - have some sort of censure - and be done with it. Enough is enough.

The National interest has taken second or third or last place by the witch hunters, by the Congress, and by the President in this matter.

The procession of charges are excessive, Ken Starr is a clear and present danger to civil society -

Clinton’s really crime is a unusual sexual life and getting away with it. the crime of being different.

Some people are upset by the post-modern world.

As in an INQUISITION. the effort is a violent effort to hold back the future - in Spain and Latin America the modern world was held back for centuries..

They remained poor and backward but pompous, pretentious, and true to the old faith.

Deviants were accused and compelled under oath to answer all charges against them, thus becoming their own accusers.

The testimony of two witnesses was generally considered proof of guilt the judges, would announce 30 days' grace for all heretics to come in and confess their crimes. When that period was up the trial of the accused and unrepentant ones began.

The penances and sentences for those who confessed or were found guilty were pronounced together in a public ceremony at the end of all the processes. This was the sermo generalis or auto-da-fé. Penances might consist of a pilgrimage, a public scourging, a fine, or the wearing of a cross.

The wearing of two tongues of red cloth, sewn onto an outer garment, marked those who had made false accusations..

The names of the guilty were announced and punishments inflicted, ranging from fines and excommunication to imprisonment for life or burning at the stake for incorrigible heretics..

The Inquisition was sometimes used as a cloak for political and private revenge. At times the sincerest inquisitors were misled by fanatical zeal and they practiced great cruelties.

Reasons for being STUPID:

Dumb comes in four main types ( smart comes in their opposites )

First, mental capacity  - augmented by practice, education and training - dumb by nature and nurture.

Second, continually using experience that no longer works - refusal to adjust to change or addicted to old habits, dumb by practice and tradition.

The IBM's USSR ( USS-was )

Third, misapplication of principles - using false theory or unyielding orthodoxy in practice - dumb by choice or by force - Spainish religious history -

fourth, compulsive, irrational, diseased and deformed personalities -  Stupid by pathology.

All of these are reflected in our current political situation.

Remember the fundamentals of American Politics:

There is just a dimes worth of difference between the political parties - they both need the same voters - moderates, those in the center.

The ONLY real issue is power - privileges and special services paid for by MONEY.

The goal is control of critical levers of power in congressional committees.

Therefore, it doesn’t make much difference to the country who is elected, so the public really doesn’t care much but a lot of difference to the people in the trade so politicians are very interested.

The impeachment was only about getting votes for the people in power in congress.

NOW they are being stupid:

They are not stupid by nature or training,
so they are using methods that did work in the recent past but no longer work ( reason two above - misapplied experience ) attack politics - the theory that people vote against not for a positive program.

Newt and attack radio was almost completely based on "cultural wars" attacks, the residual anger of white, southern, males who hated the "counter culture "  hippies and anti-war, anti-Nixon, and many aspects of the post modern world.

A misapplication of FUNDEMENTALIST principles - number three above - about sexual orthodoxy and on the part of the President, compulsive habits.

AE21, Education for century twenty-one:

The school of AE21 will have the following characteristics:

Teaching.htm

Firm foundation the Basics - high standard test scores 80% or better;
Higher level thinking and problem solving;
Technology and communications saturation - lots of links and free enterpise
Inventive, creative - flexible -

( See John Dewey )
Small - stable - smart - un-graded - individualized on-task focus of the one-room school house Mostly private, religious, charter, voucher schools and a few public "site based management" institutions

( See Fiske and Harlem schools in a school )

Human resources are the critical prerequisite to the process of building wealth, prosperity and the civil open society.

The reasons for the "Wealth of Nations" or the relative poverty of "backwardness" has to do with the character and skills of the population. Curiosity and a positive image of the future are the reasons for the industrial revolution, first, second and third.

The religious and political changes in England and the Low Countries in the 15th century made for the possibilities of the modern world.

What is less well understood are the "qualitative" nature of human abilities.

There are the following stages, each not replaced by the next advance but over-layered with each becoming dominate in turn but not replacing previous models. As canals and bicycles still play an important role in European transportation, augmented by trains, cars and planes.

The first level is the "skilled crafts" - a long apprenticeship with hands on methods produces a high level of abilities - Cathedrals with stained glass, Columbus, clocks, water wheels and the first tools and factories of the first industrial revolution. Education was literacy - Grammar schools and basic accounting, drafting and organizing shills.

In the 19th century, higher education in the Agricultural and Mechanical arts began to pay off.

The newly unified Germany began to surpass England because of excellence in technical training while Great Britain stayed with the Classical educational process - founded on Latin and Greek rather than Science and Math.

The United States quickly adjusted to technical training but "trade schools" have always have low status compared to "liberal arts" college preparation. High level technical Universities such as Georgia Tech, MIT, Cal-Tech, IIT, Stanford and Polly -tech parts of the mega-universities have made extraordinary contributions to economic welfare in this country and world wide.

The second industrial revolution of electrical, biological and chemical engineering is based on formal training in math and science.

The MBA in business maybe useful in production of rational "corporate people" and culture.

The majority of mangers still come from the technical, legal and accounting professions.

The third level of human skill for Century twenty-one has to do with creativity in a global communications technology. We still need skilled craft people, we need to improve basic literacy and grammar, enterprise, with science and technology in complex engineering tasks.

Computer people carry the unhappy title of "software engineer" because they are trying to fit into an older model of categories in human resource management. Is someone who creates games and innovative web practices doing arts or sciences or applied technology ? If you visit a trade show in the computer - consumer electronics - communications business you find new younger people doing new things with a "strange" mixture of backgrounds, including a lot of "rock and roll music" nationalities - and very unclear standards of higher education and training. Smart is as smart does - and "stupid is as stupid does".

Something missing:

Most people who have ever lived on this planet, were born and died within a fifty mile range.

Their perceptions are defined within what is called a tribal culture - part real and part superstition. Applied rational knowledge is fairly modern as a cultural style and still not seriously or firmly established as a norm.

The irrational base of human understanding is clearly demonstrated by politics and commercials.

NOW as we enter into a global technical society our social world is as little understood as the physical.

The new world order - lacks a vision or social psychological foundation. ]

The technology itself is revolutionary.

The global economy requires new models of thought. It’s not surprising that it is difficult and there is a lot of active and passive resistance.

The leaders and leading institutions often don’t get it. Non-linear, transactional, mutually dependent rapid change appears to many as anarchy and chaos - morally questionable and in conflict with traditional values. That is because global transformations are a real revolution. Serious changes are disruptive of the existing order.

Social and Religious Conservatives are only 5 % of the population but 10 % of the voters. If the Republicans get 3/4th of their votes they win because the other marginal or floating voters split fairly evenly. Without strong motivation on social issues the Republicans are a minority party.

If the Democrats stay in the center and let the Republicans form a circular firing squad they win by a few points .. If they motivate the New Deal coalition they win by useful majorities.

The critical voters are motivated by emotional appeals - worries, concerns, dislikes and prejudices, stimulated by charismatic appeals of political advertising and negative campaigns.

4

Art is long, and time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still like muffled drums are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.
I

Because of the numbers -

The lack of a working consensus

The ship of state thus is without a rudder - We flounder without a captain,
without vision, without the knowledge of where we are and where the voyages are going,

The ship lacks sails full in the wind,

The ship lacks a firm hand on the tiller,

5

Trust no future, howe'er pleasant!

Let the dead Past bury its dead!

Act, act in the living present!

Heart within, and God o'erhead!
I

Thus it has been for more than a generation and will be until the system changes....

6
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.
Ibid

The change is not tinkering with campaign reform, or blaming the Speaker or the President - but it the way the great ship is managed.

Proportional representation and nationalization of the political parties have been in the political experience of human societies ways that have worked elsewhere. We need to look around the world to gather experience and knowledge on how to run the ship of state - as we did a few centuries ago - and make some fundamental changes in the Second Constutional Convention.
.

7
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate; 5
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labour and to wait.

The History of the Future:

The good, the true and the Beautiful as a political program:

As the great center - right of center ( moderates ) and left of center ( progressives ) struggle to find a tactical program that will provide VICTORY and power:

A strategic ideology can guide the day-to-day platform, motivate the troops and give a semblance of order, logic and reason to political appeals composed of fragments and popular program appeals.

The requirements for a long term successful campaign are moral values, truth and beauty.

The moral values:

The good

Right: Freedom and property, individual empowerment

The moderates of the conservative right - love of property which allows the good life as requires the rule of law ( life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ) Original values of the founding fathers - small, limited, divided federal government - 18th century liberals - Locke, Hamiliton’s Federalist, Low Tory

The Progressives: Civic Virtues, community progress

The liberals of the left center - love of the "good society", moral leadership to create a more "perfect" union, clean, safe, educated - with civic values and obligations - social evolution encourages tolerance, equality of opportunity, diversity, civil liberty - Jefferson, Mill, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, "good government" progressives.

THE TRUE:

Freedom, private property and individual empowerment are historic processors of economic progress.

The rule of law with the protection of private property requires the consent of the governed. Freedom and free market conditions create functional trusts and monopolies and such wide disparities of wealth that social tension - class warfare causes rebellions and revolutions. It is in the interest of property to promote social justice and regulation of trusts, environmental side effects, reasonable planning, zoning, labor laws, taxes etc. Etc..

The search for equality, social justice can and does destroy freedom. In a popular appeal for "fairness", individuals are subject to political correctness, social pressure against achievement - the "dumb-ing down" of education, mass media, the arts and political discussion. Socialism doesn’t work because of limits it places on productive activity and motivation - national deficits as welfare costs become and excessive "social overhead" costs on all work and saving. What you tax - you get less of - work and saving. What you subsidize you get more of - health care costs, disabilities, over production of certain commodities, military equipment, welfare babies, etc.etc..

So the right needs the left and the left needs the right - both would destroy themselves and the society if they ruled without the constrain of the other.

The Beautiful:

The beauty of the image of the U.S. Constitution is the blend of Property and civic virtue - while you can have a market economy you can not have a market society !

The rousing image from the right: ( center )

Personal empowerment -

POSITIVE: you can be what you work at being - the moral messages from motivational movements ( Nightingale - Carnegie - Covey - many others)

They do get to social responsibility - a higher power and meaning;

NEGATIVE: but there is some of the devil to the hindmost - people that don’t make it are treated a little like Scrooge’s " aren’t here poor houses enough " and a little racism and anti-foreign, anti-Communist "Americium First "-

The rousing image from the left ( center )

The protective ( New Deal - fair Deal -) Good Community -

POSITIVE: A society that provides education, health care, social security, clean air, water, safe food - public works and economic protection when the free market doesn’t work;

NEGATIVE: But there is a protective union labor attitude - save jobs over productivity, protective trade practices, anti-business regulation, excessive law suits, environmental laws, labor, health and safety rules, etc. ETC...

First we need to fix the problem not the blame.
Second, we need to deal with facts, realities not myths and false images
Third, we need to be global
fourth, we need to be moral and have love for the earth, high hope and aims for mankind.

First, MONEY is not a fixed commodity but a state of mind.
Resources can expand or contract in ways different from gold or classical physics and economics.
Second, if the people with a positive attitude support those in a negative situation both will benefit.

The capitalist economies suffered from booms and busts most of the 19th and half of the 20th century. People learned from the great depression and hyper inflation how to run central banking so there were not a continuing crisis in banking, credit, bonds and currency supply. International stability and growth were promoted by private arrangement among central bankers and international institutions - the IMF for international settlements and the so-called "World bank" really a multi-lateral development fund.

New Products:

As Joseph Schumpeter described beautifully, enterprise and most of economic growth depend on new products. He created the economics of inventions and new enterprise let by merchant adventurers and what we now call entrepreneurs.

Starting in the 12th century with clocks, water wheels, wool, and exotic products from the east ; there is a short list of new products and process that were the engines of growth, industrialization, political and military power and wealth.

Most were refinements of agricultural goods which generated systems of wealth.

The new riches made for increasing the effective demand for thousands of other products. International trade needed ships, and ships needs marine supplies, and plantations needed equipment and household goods as the cycle of growth and enterprise widened, deepened and expanded.

Wool, then spices, cotton, sugar, and tobacco drove the early commercial empires and were the sources of slavery, the factory system and the first industrial revolution of steam, iron and coal in the 18th century.

The second revolution in the 19th century was generated by oil, steel, ships and railroads built on cattle, grains, and scientific agriculture.

The third set of growth engines in the 20th century were automobiles ( roads, gas stations ) then planes, and electrified communications and appliances in combination with chemistry, creating plastics, radios, telephones and television. Industrial products replace agricultural as the major source of new wealth only at the beginnings of this century.

Each product goes from being exotic and expensive, to a common commodity. Each product offers huge profits and excitement, then becomes just another part of the expected.

The computer, tele-communications industry at the end of the 20th century is the last of the "hard" products to generate vast new wealth, adventure, and enterprise.

As manufactured goods replaced agricultural goods as the basis of growth, so now software replaces "hardware" as the center of wealth, power, growth, extraordinary profits and attention. Software that does more than replace existing methods and processes, does more that inform and entertain, but actually produces new sets of production and consumer goods.

The fourth industrial revolution in the 21st century are the Network Communication devices we now call telephones, Portable and wireless, radio and television, the internet, computers, PC’s, word processors, image processors, design processors, information processors, inventory, shipping, OEM, delivery systems , catalogs, stores, banks, travel agents, schools, all tied with a universal serial bus to a simple device.

The device receives and sends on wireless, satellite, copper wire, cable, optic, radio waves or what ever is the low cost provider.

The engine which stimulates a family of communications and hardware appliances and networks of communications links, are the Universal Software standards. Anyone’s application can work with anyone’s application using anyone’s links and hardware.

The palm pilot, lap top, is the prototype of the universal device of the 21st century.

The extraordinary profits are not in commodity hardware but unique software that makes all this easy and common. Microsoft is unlikely but not excluded from production of software and operational codes for simple, clean, universal, high density digital systems ( MP3, HDTV ) which are cheap and work.

The Best Analysis from the Washington Post:

In Clinton, A Past That's Ever Prologue And a review of the story to date:

The Washington Post

The Lewinsky Tapes

A Year of Living Dangerously: ( Movie about Indonesia )

It's not so complex. Clinton is clearly a driven man. He was focused on becoming President. He had character faults. He has great talents. After winning re-election he has been depressed by the pressure of a awful job, and begins to break. He does these very stupid things to force himself into the situation where he has to quit - It's not uncommon, people do things that appear ill rational to force themselves because of mixed emotions and unconscious forces.

The scandal:

Linda Tripp worked in the White House before Clinton and was into gossip scandal and is somewhat unstable. She never should have been in a position of trust. She thought she had a "Behind Closed doors" book idea and was working with a ghost writer and Julie Anne Goldberg a agent for such books.

There was not enough material.

The White House moved her to the PR office at the Pentagon with a much better job. Since this office was cooperative with Presidential staff, they also moved Monica over there when she was becoming a problem hanging around the President.

BINGO - Monica plus Linda was the combo that caused the scandal - of coarse, the Presidents bad behavior and lack of discretion was the necessary but not sufficient cause.

The staff did a terrible job of hiding the girl, getting her out of town and keeping her and it quiet.

There was no useful effort to cover up, "obstruct justice" lie, get other to lie, et al or we wouldn’t have all this fuss. Monica blabbers and Linda tapes. Linda fancies she is in danger as she collects really nasty material on the President. Maybe she should have been - but there is no "crime" except bad taste and indiscretion.

However, now the President has looked the camera in the eye and said "what girl", he now has to say "Oh, that girl". Since "the public" thinks one election is enough and the country is doing fine, enough is enough.

There is no taste for legal or congressional action. So it’s just a press frenzy. Sound and fury with little real effect. As Nixon discovered a limited "hang out" only feeds the frenzy.

What I have learned from the crisis:

The republic is in good shape and does not depend on the personal problems of the President.

Markets over react - during the first weekend the dollar and bond rates were excessive in their reactions - I though it was serious - but it was a flash in the pan.

There is NO CRIME so what is it all about ?

Patriotism counts - I think the surprising support for President Clinton, is not only that the country is doing well and doesn't want to be bothered but he is the only President we have and people still support their country.

The right wing will make a serious error if it tries to exploit the situation and appears to do damage to the country.

If a foreign power wished to do us harm, it couldn't do much better than hire Judge Starr. This is the stuff of destabilization attacks - very anti-American and unpatriotic. Loyal people support their President.

People are happy the budget, welfare and other problems are being worked on and don't want Government by scandal.

They are angry with the press, the attackers, and want to get on with their business.

Tuesday Night:

The impression I get from the polls and my wife, the typical American, is very angry with Ms. Lewinsky, Mrs. Tripp, and Judge Starr. Less so with the President. So he's a creep, he's foolish, compulsive, but he's the only President we have and the country is doing fine thank you.

Foreigners took the crisis more seriously because they have the false impression that the President is an important governmental official with grave responsibilities. We know the country does fine with President with dementia, lazy and foolish hacks, compulsives et al.

The country is not especially run at all - but in so far as decision ever get made they are the result of much wheeling and dealing among ,any elite and interest groups.

The Cuban American Foundation runs our policy on Cuba,

The Israel lobby on the middle east, taxes, tax breaks, who pays and who benefits is handled by Congress with the best politicians money can buy.

The President has become a front man, a distraction from the real back room action. While 1000 reporters follow the details of his sex life, no one covers the real action- who get what, when and how.

EXCITE UPDATES

His former White House chief of staff, Leon Panetta, raised the specter of

Clifton's resignation in an interview published on Saturday by the San Jose Mercury News in California. Panetta said the scandal had created a crisis for the Democratic Party.
"If these are baseless charges, it'll be okay," Panetta said. "On the other hand, if there's something there, and it leads to him having to step out of office, it may be time to do some repair work and that may not have the consequences you would expect."

It would be better for the Democrats under those circumstances "if (Vice President Al) Gore became president and you had a new message and new individual up there.

The worst scenario is if there's substance to it and it drags on," Panetta said.

The scandal deepened on a Los Angeles Times report that said Lewinsky claimed Clinton "frequently telephoned her at home late at night, engaged in telephone sex with her and eventually devastated her emotionally by becoming involved with several other women."

The newspaper quoted "a person close to the matter" who heard portions of Lewinsky's secretly taped conversations.

"Lewinsky is heard saying that she engaged only in oral sex with the president and that Clinton told her he did not consider such an act to constitute a sexual affair," the Los Angeles Times reported from Washington.

The New York Times said Lewinsky claimed a dress was among gifts Clinton gave her, and that it contained a semen stain from the president.

Television reports said agents working for Starr searched Lewinsky's apartment and seized a computer, dress, gold brooch and items from the Black Dog gift shop on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts where the Clintons vacation.

Fix the problem not the blame:

The Tailgate crisis demonstrates how the greatest republic on Earth has a Ricky 18th Century political system which is a danger to our selves and others.

Most of the free world is governed by a parliamentary system. In such a system the executive must retain the confidence of the legislature or resign. Trust in government is critical to the economy, the value of the currencies, law and order, civilization, education, public welfare and the national security. All of these are threatened by divided, weak, corrupt, inefficient, ineffective, systems of management and selection of leadership.

The US economy will lose about a trillion dollars in value because the system allows the selection of national leaders on the basis of money and marketing, without the most important "check and balance" of responsive political parties, experience and testing before moving up to the top slot. In no other country could an obscure provisional governor become head of state based on appearance, clever marketing, and the ability to raise money.

What the Congress can do:

Political party charter law - instead of banning "soft" money - make contributions to national political parties the major source of electoral funds including public funds. In return limit campaigns to 30 days, expenditures at 1/10,000 of Per Capita Income per voter, and make parties responsive for the selection of leaders ( without primaries ). Primaries only promote extremist and private marketing of 535 independent small business call representatives and senators.

The elected party should select amount their number candidates for President.

If you retain primaries candidates have to be qualified by the parties and hold their franchise within party rules.

What a Constitutional Convention could do.

Referendum and recall, the same as above, or a structure similar to what we helped draft for the Federal Republic of Germany - well balance proportional representation, federal republic with cross representation, prime minister and President. Germany has a national health system more than 100 years old that works, a good Educational system, civilized laws, welfare etc.

February gold rose $9.00 to $300.50 an ounce.
